About Liberty Square

Liberty Square — known in Georgian as Tavisuplebis Moedani and also called Freedom Square — is a deep underground station on Line 1 (Akhmeteli–Varketili, the red line), opened in 1967 in the historic centre of Tbilisi. It serves Freedom Square, the city’s principal civic plaza.

Above the station the square is dominated by the gilded St George statue atop its tall column and by Tbilisi City Hall. This is the main gateway to Old Tbilisi and the atmospheric Sololaki neighbourhood, with their cobbled lanes, balconied houses and wine bars.

From here it is a short walk to many of the city’s headline sights, including Narikala Fortress, the sulphur bathhouses of Abanotubani, and the funicular and cable-car routes that climb to Mtatsminda and Narikala. For most visitors, Liberty Square is the natural starting point for exploring the old town on foot.
