About Avlabari
Avlabari is an underground station on Line 1 (Akhmeteli–Varketili, the red line) of the Tbilisi Metro, opened in 1967. It sits beneath the historic Avlabari district on the left bank of the Mtkvari (Kura) river, a neighbourhood long associated with the city’s Armenian community and full of narrow streets, balconied houses and churches.
For visitors, Avlabari is one of the most useful stations on the network. It is the closest stop to several of Tbilisi’s landmark sights: the towering Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba), the medieval Metekhi Church with its equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, and Rike Park, where a cable car climbs to the Narikala Fortress.
From the station it is a short walk down toward the river and across to the Old Town, with its sulphur bath quarter (Abanotubani) and winding lanes. The former Presidential Palace, now home to Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also stands nearby, and Avlabari is a busy mix of residents, commuters and tourists throughout the day.

Services and accessibility
Tbilisi Metro stations offer the core services below. Most stations are deep and reached only by escalator. The only documented step-free retrofit so far is Gotsiridze, where lifts were installed in 2023; lift programmes for other stations are planned but not yet in service.
Connections and transfers
Line 1 — Akhmeteli–Varketili — direct trains both directions. No transfer needed to ride this line.
City buses & marshrutkas — surface stops at the station entrances connect to the wider Tbilisi network. A flat ₾1 fare includes 90 minutes of free transfers between metro and bus.
Taxis — Bolt and Yandex taxis are widely available at street level for short hops to places off the metro alignment.
